DigiProd Pass brought its Digital Battery Passport work to Battery & Energy Storage Tech Europe 2026 in Barcelona on 8–9 September, contributing three sessions to the programme and hosting stand A100 throughout the two-day show, as manufacturers, regulators and technology providers gathered to discuss where the battery industry is heading next. Those sessions ran from a Discovery Stage talk on how Digital Product Passports will reshape the battery value chain, through a deeper look at the practical choices behind building one, to a panel discussion on whether the new passport requirements are a regulatory burden or a genuine business opportunity.
Our Chairperson, Dr Fahim Chowdhury, opened on the Discovery Stage with "The Future of Battery Transparency: How Digital Product Passports Will Reshape the Entire Value Chain." His argument: responsibility for the Battery Passport is concentrated in a single economic operator, but the data behind it is generated across manufacturing, BMS and operations, engineering, suppliers, recycling, second life and service. Closing that gap, he argued, is the real challenge, not creating a digital record but governing a trusted, interoperable, persistent data infrastructure across the battery's whole lifecycle.
The second talk, "Digital Product Passports: Choices, Challenges and Solutions for the Battery Ecosystem" in Room 2.1, moved from that framing into practical detail: the legal requirements ESPR and the Battery Regulation actually impose (persistent unique identifiers, machine-readable data carriers on open standards, defined access rights, decentralised data storage with a certified back-up copy), and what a Digital Battery Passport is made of. Under the current schema, a DBP carries 100 data attributes across seven categories, from materials and composition to performance and durability, with 91 of them mandatory and 64 required to be publicly accessible.
That session led directly into the panel "Battery Passports: Regulatory Burden or Strategic Business Opportunity?" in Room 2.1 (CC2), where Dr Chowdhury joined Giuseppe Benenati, Sales Director at Spherity, and Gabriela Benveniste, Head of the Energy Economics and Social Impacts Research Group at IREC, for around 30 minutes, moderated by Ken Davies, Managing Director of GSE Media and Conference Director of the Battery Passport Conference.
Over the half hour, the panel worked through where battery passports sit within the wider regulatory framework, the preparatory measures economic operators need to take for smooth adoption, lessons emerging from early adopters, how to choose a battery passport provider, and the positive outcomes and likely future development of the requirement.
The session walked through pilots DigiProd Pass is running across the battery ecosystem. With Corvus Energy, the team built passports for the battery system powering the ZeeTug-30, the world's first fully operational all-electric tugboat, at both module level (the 16 kWh Corvus Orca module) and system level (the Corvus–Gisas–Navtek battery system), to show the trade-off between detailed component-level tracking and simpler system-level reporting.
With BEEPlanet Factory, the pilot follows aged and end-of-life Ford EV battery packs into a stationary Energy Storage System scalable up to 1 MWh, with state-of-health data calculated and fed back into the passport.
With Instagrid, a German manufacturer of portable battery power systems, the work is connecting onboard battery management telemetry directly to the passport platform, so data capture is automatic rather than manual.
Some of the most useful news from the session was about the infrastructure itself. The EU's DPP Registry and testing environment launched in July 2026, with registration available through a user interface or API, alongside eight core technical standards now in place or in draft covering identifiers, data carriers, exchange protocols, storage, APIs, interoperability, access rights and data authentication. The Battery Passport, as Dr Chowdhury put it, is moving from concept to operational infrastructure.
Under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, batteries placed on the EU market above certain capacity thresholds must carry a digital battery passport from February 2027. Supply chain due diligence obligations under the same Regulation apply from 18 August 2027, following the postponement set out in Regulation (EU) 2025/1561.
Batteries sit inside the wider Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, (EU) 2024/1781, which extends the digital product passport requirement to other product categories over the coming years, including textiles, furniture, footwear and plastics.
